BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Junior forward Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) of the University of Michigan men's soccer netted four goals in a 24-minute span in the second half as the Wolverines defeated Bowling Green 6-1 Sunday afternoon (Sept. 28) on Mickey Cochrane Field. With a four-goal game two weeks ago (Sept. 14 vs. UNC Greensboro), Turpin is the first player in Big Ten Conference history to accomplish the feat twice in a career.
| | Turpin recorded his second four-goal game in two weeks. |
Turpin made the score 2-0 on his first goal of the afternoon when he intercepted a Falcon clearing attempt, dribbled past a defender and blasted the ball past David DeGraff at 67:26. It took Turpin only 6:13 to make it a 3-0 advantage. Fellow junior Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) had the ball at his feet 12 yards from the goal and saw Turpin standing with his back to the net across the box, so he slipped the ball through to Turpin's feet. Turpin quickly turned and fired a shot that found the back netting for his second goal of the match.
Bowling Green answered at 75:05 as Cory Stevens netted his first of the year with assists from Matt Martinka and Ben Monnette, but Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) again put U-M up by three when he converted a penalty kick at 77:12. The penalty kick was awarded after a Falcon defender dragged Turpin to the ground in the BGSU goal box.
Turpin continued his scoring onslaught when Michael O'Reilly (Spring, Texas/Klein HS) found him with a 55-yard service down the sideline in Falcon territory. Turpin again found himself in a breakaway situation, maneuvered around a defender and beat the keeper for his fourth career hat trick.
He was back on the attack a minute and a half later when White found him for his fourth of the evening at 88:13, thus ending the scoring with the Wolverines ahead 6-1.
The Wolverines (6-3) have Monday off before they head to Rochester, Mich., for a non-conference friendly with intrastate rival and No. 12-ranked Oakland University Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 30). Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. on the OU Soccer Field.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Steve Burns
On playing with a lead ... "When we can get ahead and force the defense to stretch the field, we can be very dangerous. With the defense stretched Mychal (Turpin), Knox (Cameron) and Mike (White) can create many opportunities for us to score."
On the game ... "Leading up to this game we worked a lot on the movement of our forwards. It is awfully difficult for the defense to defend against three forwards who recoginze where the ball is going and are able to simulatiously adapt to the flow of the game."
On Mychal Turpin ... "He has been our most dominant player in recent weeks. He is extremely dangerous when we find him on a run and he is able to use his creativity in the open field."
On facing No. 12 Oakland on Tuesday ... "We are trying to build that momentum up with this win today. It was very difficult to stay focused for this game when we knew that Oakland was right around the corner. This helps our confidence. Their coaches were in the crowd today and we were there watching their game on Friday, so there will be no surprises by either side come Tuesday."
N O T E S
Mychal Turpin became the first player in Big Ten Conference history to post two four-goal games in a career. Both of his four-tally matches have come this season, as the junior netted four goals in a 4-3 overtime victory over UNC Greensboro Sept. 19.
Turpin's four goals propelled him to the top of many Michigan record lists. He is now the program's all-time leading goal scorer (23) and point scorer (56).
Through nine games this season, Turpin has tied the Michigan record for goals in a season, as the junior has 10 goals in 2003. Last year both he and Knox Cameron found the back of the net 10 times. Turpin also has 21 points this season. In 2002 he set the program record with 25 points in 20 games.
Turpin and Cameron are the first two members of the 50-point club in Michigan history. Turpin has 56 points (23 goals and 10 assists), while Cameron has 50 points (19 goals and 12 assists). Mike White is only two points shy with 48 (17 goals and 14 assists).
Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) earned his 12th win of his career. Zawacki's victory tied him with Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio./Northview HS) as the program's all-time winningest goalkeeper.
Michael O'Reilly earned his first career point when he assisted on Turpin's third goal of the afternoon.
Kevin Savitskie (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) was in the starting lineup for the first time is his Michigan career.
