CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Junior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team defeated his fourth straight opponent at the 2003 Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships to move into the round of 16 at the prestigious national tournament held at The Champions Club.
After posting wins against both of his opponents in the qualifying round on Wednesday (Oct. 8), Rubin opened main draw play against Paco Antelo of South Florida on Thursday (Oct. 9). Rubin and Antelo battled for nearly three and a half hours, with Antelo taking the first set 7-6(7) before Rubin rebounded to take the final two sets 6-1, 7-5.
Following the marathon match against Antelo, Rubin geared up to face Tobias Clemens of UCLA. Clemens, the No. 3-ranked singles player in the nation and third seed in the tournament, quickly jumped out in front by winning the first set 6-3. Rubin regrouped and won the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(5). In the third set, Clemens began to wear down and Rubin immediately took advantage, cruising to a 6-0 win to clinch the match.
Rubin, who is ranked No. 78 in the preseason ITA national singles rankings, continues his quest for the national title when he faces Izak van der Merwe of Old Dominion on Friday(Oct. 10). The match is scheduled for 10 a.m. EDT.
