ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team concluded its exhibition schedule with a 6-2 victory over York University Friday night (Oct.3) at Yost Ice Arena. The Wolverines outshot their opponents 74-14 and were paced by a one-goal, two-assist performance by junior defenseman Nick Martens (Ann Arbor, Mich.).
In an action-packed first period, York opened the scoring only 23 seconds into the game. Following the initial faceoff, left wing Daryl Thompson skated down the left side into the Michigan zone and fired a centering pass into the slot. The puck deflected off teammate Jason Pinizzotto and then off sophomore Jeff Tambellini (Port Moody, B.C.) before trickling through the legs of sophomore Al Montoya (Glenview, Ill.).
Michigan evened the score only 45 seconds later when freshman David Rohlfs (Northville, Mich.) slipped a backhand shot blocker side past York goaltender Derek Dolson. The play started when fellow freshman T.J. Hensick (Howell, Mich.) won the faceoff and slid the pass to Rohlfs, who was positioned on the left wing. Rohlfs then brought the puck to his backhand side and fired it past Dolson from the right hash marks.
Michigan added to its lead 3:33 into the first period when Martens capitalized on a shorthanded break. Martens beat Dolson low on the right pad side with a shot through a screen in front of the net. Junior Jason Ryznar (Anchorage, Alaska) picked up the assist on the goal.
The Wolverines continued the scoring tear at 6:04 when Eric Nystrom (Syosset, N.Y.) netted a power-play marker. Holding position in front of the net, Nystrom tipped in a shot from the point by Martens.
York made the game a one-goal affair at 7:00 when left wing Geoff Cambell converted a two-on-one break. The play started when center Daryl Bat gathered the puck at his own blue line and penetrated the Michigan zone along the right boards. Bat slid the puck to Cambell, who slotted the puck past Montoya low on the stick side, with junior defenseman Eric Werner (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) trailing the rush just a second late.
Michigan retook momentum at 14:23 when Tambellini converted on a two-man advantage. Junior Brandon Rogers (Rochester, N.H.) initiated the play with a shot from the point. After Dolson failed to control the rebound, Tambellini collected the puck on the right side of the net and sent it past Dolson low on the right side.
Kaleniecki wrapped up the scoring in the first period when he put away his own rebound with a wrap-around shot that beat Dolson on the stick side.
In contrast to the offensive hockey displayed in the first period, York held the Wolverines scoreless in the second period thanks to a number of acrobatic saves from Dolson. Michigan dominated play throughout the period but could not increase its lead despite a total of 30 shots directed Dolson's way.
Dolson continued his outstanding play in the third period, stopping a flurry in front of the York net early in the period. He kept the Wolverines at bay until 10:54 when junior Milan Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.) converted a power-play goal. Gajic initiated the play with a shot from the point, which Dolson directed to the right circle. Gajic jumped on his own rebound, sniping the right corner of the net with a wrist shot through several York defenders.
The Maize and Blue will open regular-season play when they host Mercyhurst tomorrow night (Saturday, Oct. 4) at Yost Ice Arena. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
