10 Years of Leadership ...
Mike McGuire enters his 11th season as head coach for the University of Michigan women's cross country team. In his first four seasons, McGuire accomplished what few have done in a lifetime, winning three consecutive Big Ten Conference and NCAA District IV championships, and finishing as high as second at the 1994 NCAA National Championship. To date, McGuire's Michigan teams have finished in the top two at the Big Ten championships in nine of his 10 years as head coach. McGuire's Wolverines also boast eight top-two finishes at the regional championships, winning the regional meet three consecutive years, 1993-95. His teams have finished among the nation's top 10 five times at the NCAA National Championship.
Since joining the Wolverines' coaching staff in 1992, McGuire has earned both the Big Ten and NCAA District IV Coach of the Year honors three times, and is one of only two coaches to earn the conference honor three consecutive seasons. Under McGuire's guidance, Michigan has had its best individual and team NCAA cross country finishes.
