Four Michigan harriers finished in the top 10 with junior/sophomore Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) leading the way with a third-place showing in 18:17 on the 5,000-meter course in Cass-Benton Park in Northville, Mich. It marks the first time the Wolverines have won their opening meet of the season since 2000, when Katie Jazwinski helped U-M to a first-place finish at the Miami Invitational (Sept. 9, 2000).
Parker Sets New Standard ...
Junior/sophomore Andrea Parker led the Wolverines to victory last Saturday (Sept. 7) with a third-place finish at the Running-Fit Detroit Mercy Invitational. Parker crossed the line in 18:17, tying the second best cross country time of her career. Her career best is 18:09.6 set last season at the Big Ten Conference Championships (Oct. 28) at the Illinois Orange and Blue Golf Course in Savoy, Ill. Parker's previous best finish was an eighth-place showing at the 2001 Miami Invitational (Sept. 8).
Captain Spink ...
Head coach Mike McGuire has named senior Jeanne Spink (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) team captain for the 2002 season. Spink was an All-Big Conference second teamer last year for the Wolverines finishing 13th at the 2001 Big Ten Championships with a time of 17:49.3. The time set a new personal-best mark as it was the first time she broke the 18-minute barrier.
The Mike McGuire File ...
Mike McGuire is in his 11th season as a head coach for the Michigan women's cross country team. McGuire coached the Wolverines to victory last Saturday (Sept. 7) at the Running-Fit Invitational with a low score of 26 points. In his first four seasons, McGuire won three consecutive Big Ten Conference and NCAA District IV championships, and finished as high as second at the 1994 NCAA National Championship. All told, McGuire's Michigan teams have nine top-two finishes at the Big Ten championship and eight top-two finishes at the regional championships, winning the regional meet in 1993, '94 and '95. His teams have finished among the nation's top 10 five times at the NCAA Championships.
