Ryals has enjoyed a breakout season after a successful but quiet year as a freshman in 2001. She earned her first 10.0 with a perfect floor routine at Ohio State (Jan. 26) and then earned the mark at the State of Michigan Classic (Feb. 3) and against Denver and Washington (March 9). She helped carry the team through an injury-filled stretch of the season by winning five consecutive all-around titles. The titles came during a stretch in which she won 15 of a possible 30 event titles. Over the course of the season, Ryals has placed among the top five in 45 of 52 routines, including a string of 22 consecutive.
Ryals leads the Wolverines into the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday (April 6) at State College, Pa. With a top-two finish at the regional competition Michigan would qualify for its 11th trip to the NCAA National Championships, which will be held April 18-20 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
