BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team continued its late-season surge, claiming a 5-2 victory against Indiana Saturday (April 20) at the IU Tennis Courts. The Wolverines (14-6, 5-4 Big Ten) won their sixth match in seven tries by earning the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots and claiming four of the six singles contests.
Michigan senior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga./S.D. Independent Study) continued their domination at the No. 2 doubles spot, winning an 8-3 match against Zach Held and Ryan Recht. Sophomore Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and senior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) clinched the team point with an 8-4 victory over Reid Strand and Jakub Praibis at No. 3. The Hoosiers kept the Wolverines from a doubles sweep as Milan Rakvica and Ari Widlansky posted an 8-5 win over junior Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and sophomore Brett Baudinet (Rarotonga, Cook Islands/King's College) at No. 1.
In singles action, the Wolverines put the match away with victories at the No. 3 through No. 6 spots. Indiana collected straight-set victories at top two slots of the singles lineup, with Rakvica defeating Beam at No. 1 and Praibis beating senior Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) at No. 2. However, Michigan's Lockin and Jackson won straight-set matches at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. Lockin gained his team-leading 26th singles win of the year and Jackson became the second player to reach 20 wins with his 6-3, 6-1 victory over Tommy Bagnato.
