WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team was unable to complete the regular season on a winning note, losing 5-2 against Purdue Sunday afternoon (April 21) at the Varsity Tennis Courts. The Wolverines (14-7, 5-5 Big Ten) lost the doubles point and managed only two singles victories in the loss to the Boilermakers (10-10, 6-4 Big Ten).
Michigan was unable to win a doubles match for the first time this season as Purdue swept all three doubles matches in impressive fashion. The Boilermakers won 8-3 matches at No. 2 and No. 3 and 8-5 at the top spot.
In singles action, Purdue put the match away with straight-set victories at three spots. Derek Miller gained the Boilermakers' final point of the match in the afternoon's only three-set match, winning a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 contest against senior Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) at No. 2. Wolverine senior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) ended a four-match losing streak with an impressive 7-6, 6-2 victory against Scott Mayer at No. 1 to give U-M its first point of the match. Fellow senior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) collected U-M's only other win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Laith Al-Agba at No. 5.
