U-M Takes 11th at Rain-Shortened Kepler Intercollegiate

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With rainy conditions cancelling Sunday's (April 14) final-day competition at the 33rd Kepler Intercollegiate, the University of Michigan men's golf squad kept its two-day, 36-hole total of 598 (303-295/598) and finished the tournament in 11th place. Sophomore David Nichols (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) led the Wolverines, finishing tied for 17th place behind an even-par round of 71 on Saturday.

In addition to Nichols' tie for 17th place (76-71/147), Chapman finished tied for 24th (73-75/148) and Kilcherman (78-74/152) finished in a tie for 50th with fellow senior Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS), who turned in a 77 in the first round and a 75 on Saturday. Sophomore Scott Carlton (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) finished in sole possession of 59th place (77-80/157).
Nevada-Las Vegas finished on top after two days of competition, shooting back-to-back rounds of 288 for a 576 total. Colorado placed second after rebounding from a first-round score of 295 by shooting the tournament low of 284 in the second round for a total of 576. Purdue (293-289/582) rounded out the top three. Purdue's Lee Williamson was the only individual to shoot under par with rounds of 71-68 for a 139 total. Five individuals shared runner up honors at 143.
After a weekend off, the Wolverines will stay in Big Ten country as they travel to East Lansing, Mich., Saturday and Sunday, April 27-28, to participate in the Bruce Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course. Last year, the Maize and Blue finished 10th of the 15 teams competing in East Lansing, and Chris Kellogg (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) tied for 22nd to lead the Wolverines.

N O T E S
David Nichols tied a season-best with a 71 in the second round of the Kepler Intercollegiate. Nichols accomplished the feat twice before, in the first and second rounds of the Badger Invitational (Sept. 8-9).
Andy Matthews continued his streak of consecutive tournaments played. He now has played 46 straight tournaments for the Maize and Blue.
