Wolverines Move Up One Spot to Finish 10th at Fossum

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- With overcast and high wind weather conditions, the University of Michigan men's golf team persevered through the poor weather to move up one position paced behind a final team round of 297 today (Sunday, April 28) and finished 11th (307-312-297/916) at the Bruce Fossum/TaylorMade Invitational, hosted by Michigan State at Forest Akers West Course.
The Wolverines rallied in the final round behind one-over-par rounds of 73 by Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) and Scott Carlton (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS). David Nichols (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) followed with a 75 and Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) shot 76 to give the Maize and Blue the 297 final tally, its best total of the tournament.
With inclement weather conditions sited on the weather map, the Wolverines battled through the first round's impending conditions Saturday (April 27), opening with a 307 behind Matthews' even-par 72 and Andrew Chapman's (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) four-over 76. Then the rains and sleet swept through the course in the second round. As the playing conditions worsened the Wolverines tallied a 312 second-round score, led by Nichols' 76 and Kilcherman's 78, to give put them in the 12th spot with a 619 two-round total.
Individually, Matthews led the Wolverines with his tie for 18th (72-77-76/225). Nichols tied for 40th (79-76-75/230), Carlton tied for 54th (80-81-73/234), Kilcherman tied for 62nd (85-78-73/236) and Chapman tied for 76th (76-85-85/246).
Toledo took home both the team trophy (286-295-295/876) and the individual medalist honor as the Rockets' David Jones won by one stroke (73-74-69/216). Illinois finished second (293-298-294/885) as a team with host Michigan State coming in third (309-289-292/890). Illinois' Garrett Chaussard was the medalist runner-up (72-73-72/217).
With the regular-season tournament schedule now completed, the Wolverines will head to Iowa City, Iowa, Friday through Sunday (May 3-5) for the 2002 Big Ten Conference Championships at Finkbine Golf Course. Last year, the Maize and Blue tied for seventh (296-293-294-285/1168) at the championships.
