ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Jed Ortmeyer's (Omaha, Neb.) game-winning goal with 1:21 remaining in the contest proved to be the difference as the University of Michigan notched a 5-3 decision against the University of Denver in the second game of Saturday's (March 23) NCAA West Regional second round at Yost Ice Arena. The Wolverines advance to the Frozen Four for an NCAA-record 21st time.
U-M defenseman Mike Komisarek (left) and goaltender Josh Blackburn were named to the all-regional team. |
Denver (32-8-1) pulled its goalie with under a minute remaining and the Wolverines capitalized as Nystrom scored his second of two goals on an empty-netter with 27 seconds left for the final margin of victory.
Following a scoreless first period, both Michigan and Denver were able to kick-start their offenses in the second period with five combined goals between the two teams. Nystrom, who had a three-point game, scored just 56 seconds into the period to give the Wolverines a 1-0 edge, but DU countered on Chris Paradise's power-play tally at 3:05. However, U-M broke the one-all tie when Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) capitalized on a man advantage at 5:43 into the period.
The Pioneers were able to answer the Wolverines' power-play goal with one of their own as Kevin Doell lit the lamp at the 9:16 mark, and Denver broke the 2-2 deadlock about three minutes later as Luke Fulghum scored to give the Pioneers the advantage going into the final stanza.
Michigan, which had 38 shots on goal for the game, controlled the third period with three consecutive goals. The first came at 4:47 as a result of a deflection off Eric Werner's (Grosse Pte. Woods, Mich.) stick to knot the contest at 3-3.
U-M goaltender Josh Blackburn recorded 18 saves for the Wolverines while his counterpart, Dubielewicz, turned away 33 shots on goal for the Pioneers, who were outshot 38-21.
The Wolverines advance to the Frozen Four to face Minnesota in the national semifinals on Thursday, April 4, at the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Minn. Game time will be either 12:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. CST.
