This Week: Toledo Invitational
The University of Michigan men's track and field team will travel to the Toledo Invitational on Friday and Saturday (May 4-5) on the University of Toledo Track in Toledo, Ohio. This is the third year in a row that the Maize and Blue will take part in this meet.
Last Year at Toledo Invitational
Derek Applewhite (Brighton, Colo./Brighton HS) led the way at the 2000 Toledo Invitational in Toledo, Ohio, with a victory in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.12. Applewhite was joined on the winner's stand by junior pole vaulter Charles DeWildt (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS), who won his event with a vault of 16-6. DeWildt's only challenger was teammate Brent Sheffer (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS), who placed second in the pole vault, also with a mark of 16-6. Michigan's final individual winner was Nick Rogers (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm HS), who won the shot put for the third consecutive week, with a toss of 52-4 3/4. Rogers also took second in the discus with a heave of 167-1. Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.23, while Josh Sellers (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee HS) placed runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a mark of 51.59.
Lawrence Provisionals at Penn Relays
Senior Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) ran to the first NCAA provisional time by a male Wolverine this 2001 outdoor season with his 29:32.81 effort in the 10,000-meter run at the Penn Relays (April 26) in Philadelphia, Pa. Lawrence was a 2000 NCAA Indoor All-American in the 5,000 in his only NCAA Championship appearance in his career.
Pennsylvania Natives Excel in Field
Senior co-captain Andy Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) and junior Robert Arnold (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty HS) did well in their respective events at the Penn Relays (April 28). Derr was fifth in the javelin with a throw of 205-11, while Arnold used a personal best for seventh in the Elite high jump competition, reaching a mark of 6-10 3/4.
Okenwa and DeWildt Highlight Hillsdale Relays
At the Hillsdale Relays (April 27-28), junior Ike Okenwa had Michigan's best finish by taking first in the 200-meter dash (21.63), and he placed third in the 100 (10.68). Senior Charles DeWildt had the only runner-up finish for the Maize and Blue, which he accomplished in the pole vault with a height of 17-0 3/4.
Tracking the Big Ten
With the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in three weeks in Bloomington, Ind., several Wolverines are ranked among the Big Ten elite in their respective events according to CollegeRunning.com. Here is a list of Michigan athletes who are ranked in the top five of each event (as of April 30):

PR's Fall Over Weekend
At the Penn Relays (April 26-28) and Hillsdale Relays (April 27-28), four personal bests were achieved by Michigan athletes. Here is the breakdown:

Okenwa Leading the Way, Again
The entire indoor season, junior Ike Okenwa led the team with the most individual wins, and he is doing it again during the outdoor season. Okenwa has four individual wins this season, three more than any other Wolverine on the squad. His last win came in the 200-meter dash at the Hillsdale Relays (April 28).
