COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The 24th-ranked University of Michigan softball team had its 18-game winning streak snapped this afternoon (Sunday, April 22) by a 3-2, 11-inning loss to Ohio State at Buckeye Field. Starter Marie Barda (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale HS) took the loss, breaking her own 11-game win streak in the circle, as the Wolverines dropped their first Big Ten Conference contest of the season.
Michigan (30-12-1, 13-1 Big Ten) got on the board first, scoring in the bottom of the first with the aid of an Ohio State error. Kelsey Kollen (Cerritos, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS) reached first on an error by the pitcher and advanced to second to lead off the inning. Kollen was pushed to third on a sacrifice by Melissa Taylor (Petersburg, Mich./Summerfield HS) and scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Courtney Betley (Corona, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS) to give Michigan a 1-0 lead.
That Wolverine advantage held up until Ohio State catcher Stacy Roth homered over the centerfield fence to lead off the fourth. Ohio State took its first lead of the game in the fifth, scoring on a two-single to leftfield by centerfielder Anna Smith. Ohio State had put a runner on third base with two outs thanks to a walk, passed ball and stolen base.
The Buckeyes carried the lead into the seventh when the Wolverines were able to score on a pinch-hit double to centerfield by freshman Monica Schock (Rialto, Calif./Eisenhower HS), sending the game into extra innings at 2-2. Schock's double scored Lisa Mack (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) from first. Mack was pinch running for Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS), who had stroked a one-out single.
Michigan's best chance to score in extra innings came in the 10th after the Wolverines loaded the bases with two outs. Stefanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Salem HS) and Melinda Moulden (LaCrescenta, Claif./Crescenta Valley HS) each singled, and Rebecca Tune (Aloha, Ore./Jesuit HS) was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Young, however, went down swinging to end the Wolverine threat.
Ohio State took the 3-2 lead in the top of the 11th when Barda hit Rogeanna Hottinger with two outs and the bases loaded, forcing in the winning run. Michigan was unable to mount a threat in its half of the 11th, going down 1-2-3.
The first-place Wolverines return home to Alumni Field on Friday (April 27, 2 p.m.) for a doubleheader vs. Big Ten foe Northwestern before hosting second-place Iowa in single games on Saturday (April 28, 2 p.m.) and Sunday (April 29, 1 p.m.).
