POWAY, Calif. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan softball team split a pair of games for the second straight day at the Campbell/Cartier Classic, blanking No. 22 Long Beach State 4-0 and falling 1-0 to No. 9 Fresno State on Saturday (Feb. 17).
Against Long Beach State, Michigan scored single runs in the first and fifth innings and added two in the seventh, and Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) shut down the 49ers' bats, scattering five hits and striking out five for the complete-game shutout.
Melissa Taylor (Petersburg, Mich./Summerfield HS) had a great game at the plate with two doubles, a triple, a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs. Chrissy Garza (Southgate, Mich./Anderson HS) added two hits of her own, while Kollen scored two runs and Stefanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem HS) had two RBIs.
In the nightcap, Marie Barda (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South HS) locked up in a pitchers' duel with Fresno State's Leslie Poole, with each allowing just three singles. The Bulldogs tied together two of their hits in the sixth inning and scored the game's only run on Lori Hoffman's two-out single to right.
Michigan wraps up its Campbell/Cartier Classic schedule on Sunday (Feb. 18), facing host San Diego State at 9:30 a.m. PST.
