POWAY, Calif. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan softball team closed out play at the Campbell/Cartier Classic with a 6-5 loss to tournament host San Diego on Sunday (Feb. 18). The Wolverines jumped out to a 5-1 lead after four and a half innings only to see SDSU (6-4) score two in the fifth and three in the sixth and hand U-M (2-4) its third one-run loss of the young season.

After the teams traded unearned single runs in the first inning, Melinda Moulden (LaCrescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS) popped a two-run homer with Kelsey Kollen (Cerritos, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS) aboard to put the Wolverines up 3-1 in the third.

Moulden started another two-run rally in the fifth inning when she walked with two outs. Stefanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem HS) followed with a single to rightfield, and Rebecca Tune (Aloha, Ore./Jesuit HS) walked to load the bases for Liz Elsner (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem HS), who delivered a two-run single to left.

San Diego State answered with two runs on three singles in the bottom of the fifth, then chased Moulden from the circle during its game-winning, three-run rally in the sixth. Moulden gave up seven hits and five runs (four earned) in 5.1 innings before giving way to Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS), who was tagged with the loss.

Kollen and Monica Schock (Rialto, Calif./Eisenhower HS) led the Michigan offense with two hits apiece as the Wolverines outhit the Aztecs 11-9.

The Wolverines will compete in the NFCA Leadoff Classic next Friday through Sunday (Feb. 23-25) in Columbus, Ga.
