POWAY, Calif. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan softball team began tournament action at the Campbell/Cartier Classic on Friday (Feb. 16) with an 11-0, six-inning victory over Sacramento State but then lost to No. 15 Stanford for the second straight day, falling 2-0 to the Cardinal.
Michigan (1-2) used a 10-run sixth inning to break open the game against Sacramento State. Rebecca Tune (Aloha, Ore./Jesuit HS) went 3-for-3 at the plate, including a grand slam to highlight the sixth. Kelsey Kollen (Cerritos, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS) and Stefanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem HS) each had two hits for the Maize and Blue, while Courtney Betley (Corona, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS) had three RBIs.
Marie Barda (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South HS) picked up her first victory of the season, going the distance with five strikeouts and allowing only two hits.
The Wolverines outhit Stanford 7-2, but it was the Cardinal who came up with the big blow of the game, as Sarah Beeson hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning for the only runs of the game. The Wolverines had opportunities in almost every inning but could not get a key hit with runners in scoring position to get on the board. Meghan Doe (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) had two hits in the game.
Michigan continues tournament play on Saturday (Feb. 17), facing No. 22 Long Beach State at 10:30 a.m. PST and No. 9 Fresno State at 6 p.m. PST.
