POWAY, Calif. -- The 11th-ranked University of Michigan softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 15 Stanford on Thursday (Feb. 15) in its opening contest of the 2001 season. Sophomore Melinda Moulden (LaCrescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS) drove in the Wolverines' only run of the game in the third inning, but the Cardinal (8-0) scored twice in the fifth for the win.

Michigan (0-1) took the lead in the top of the third when Moulden singled home Kelsey Kollen (Cerritos, Calif./Mater Dei HS). Kollen walked, stole second and scored on Moulden's single to left.

The only other chance for Michigan came in the bottom of the sixth. Moulden reached on an error and advanced to second on a single from Rebecca Tune (Aloha, Ore./Jesuit HS). But Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) struck out to end the inning.

Young struck out seven and walked four in the losing effort. Stanford pitcher Dana Sorensen struck out 11 and walked three to improve to 4-0.

Michigan returns to the field on Friday for a pair of games in the Campbell/Cartier Classic in Poway, Calif. The Wolverines face Sacramento State at 1 p.m. PST, followed by a rematch with Stanford at 3:30 p.m. PST.
