Nystrom Leads Wolverines Past Mavericks in Overtime

OMAHA, Neb. -- Freshman Eric Nystrom (Syosset, N.Y.) scored two goals, including the game-winner 12 seconds into overtime, to lift the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team over No. 7 Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday (Nov. 17) at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. With the win and Friday night's overtime tie, the Wolverines took three of four points in the weekend series and extended their unbeaten streak on the road to four games.
After a scoreless first period, Michigan jumped into the lead early in the second period when freshman Jason Rzynar (Anchorage, Alaska) took a pass from defenseman Eric Werner (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) and wristed a shot from the right faceoff circle. Nebraska Omaha goaltender Dan Ellis mishandled the puck, which dropped to the ice and trickled between his legs, giving Michigan a one-goal edge at 2:29. The Wolverines extended their lead seven minutes later on a backhand goal by Nystrom, who took a pass from freshman Michael Woodford (Westford, Mass.) and sent the puck past a sprawling Ellis.
The Mavericks rallied back into the game in the third period, scoring twice to tie the game. Nebraska's first goal of the period came at 2:16 when Gus Groslie deflected a shot past Michigan goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.). UNO sophomore Aaron Smith scored for Mavericks at 16:06 in the third period to send the game into the second overtime of the weekend series.
Just 12 seconds into the extra period, the Wolverines ended the game when junior captain Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) intercepted a Maverick pass and fed Nystrom, who sent the game-winning goal past Ellis.
Blackburn made 28 stops in net for the Wolverines, while Ellis stopped 22 of Michigan's 25 shots. The Mavericks outshot Michigan 30-25. Both teams were scoreless on the power play, Michigan in four tries and UNO in five.
Next up for the Wolverines is the annual College Hockey Showcase. Michigan will play host to top-ranked Minnesota on Friday (Nov. 23) and Wisconsin on Saturday (Nov. 24). Opening faceoff is slated for 7:35 p.m. Friday and 8:05 p.m. Saturday at Yost Ice Arena.
