This Week
The University of Michigan women's cross country team will compete at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday (Oct. 5), at 4:15 p.m. in South Bend, Ind. This will mark the second consecutive year the Wolverines have competed in the meet that covers 5,000 meters of the Burke Memorial Golf Course.
Wolverines at Notre Dame Invititational
Last year the Wolverines finished second place as a team with 143 points, second only to Stanford, which won the meet by totaling 35 points. Leading the way for U-M was Katie Jazwinski (1997-2000) with a fifth-place finish (17:24) while sophomore Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) earned a 37th-place finish with her time of 18:07.
Last Week
The Wolverines placed seventh at the Iona Meet of Champions in the Bronx, N.Y., (Sept. 29) as sophomore Lindsey Gallo and redshirt freshman Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) both covered the 6,000 meters of Van Cortland Park in under 22 minutes. Gallo, who was the Wolverines' top finisher at 24th, ran the meet in 21:37.0 and Parker finished shortly after in 45th with a time of 21:45.1. Senior Katie Ryan (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams HS) and junior Jeanne Spink (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) rounded out the group of U-M runners that placed in the top fifty as Ryan (22:07.9) was 45th and Spink (22:10.8) was 48th.
Reflections
Michigan's top three finishers at the Iona Meet of Champions mirrored the results from the Wolverines first scored meet of the year at the Miami Invitational (Sept. 8). In both meets, Lindsey Gallo, Andrea Parker and Katie Ryan were the Wolverines top finishers. Overall, the only runner to make her first appearance of the year in New York was junior Jane Martineau (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant HS), who placed 57th with a time of 22:24.6.
National Ranking
After ranking 24th in the preseason poll, Michigan has not been listed in the first two polls of the regular season, including the most recent ranking (Oct. 1). Two teams from the Big Ten Conference remain ranked: No. 13 Michigan State and No. 14 Wisconsin.
