ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team open its indoor season at the U-M Indoor Track and Field Building today (Saturday, Jan. 6) with the Jack Harvey Invitational. The Wolverines turned in several top finishes in the non-scoring meet.
Michigan won eight of the events, five of which were field events. Sophomore Teyonna Simpson (Freemont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS) led the way for the Wolverines with a personal best in the triple jump (40-1 1/2) for the win. Michigan did very well in all the jumping events, with junior Nicole DeNamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) taking the high jump at 5-6 1/2, junior Candice Mullings (Marietta, Ga./Walton HS) winning the pole vault (11-6 1/4), and freshman Candice Wilkey (Toronto, Ontario/Elmvale District) finishing atop the leader board in the long jump (18-9 3/4) in her first indoor meet at Michigan. In the throwing events, sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) won the shot put crown with a 43-9 mark.
Another freshman who had an outstanding debut was Mora Arnold (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea HS), who won the 400-meter dash (58.89), with three teammates behind her. Junior Ursula Taylor (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) was the victor in the 800 (2:21.52), while junior Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS) finished first in the 60-meter low hurdles (8.96).
The Wolverines will continue their season next Saturday (Jan. 13), hosting Indiana for a dual meet at the U-M Track Building, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
