ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team had its first scored meet of the indoor season with the Indiana dual meet today (Saturday, Jan. 13) at the U-M Indoor Track and Field Building. The two teams ended in a rare 81-81 tie, which came down to the final event to determine the uncommon outcome.
Michigan had a blend of success in both field and running events which provided for a very exciting ending. The day started out with a terrific performance in the pole vault. Michigan took first and third in the event, with sophomore Anna Fisher (Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) winning the title and junior Candice Mullings (Marietta, Ga./Walton HS) coming in third. Both Fisher and Mullings reached a height of 11-0 1/4.
The Wolverines dominated the triple jump as well, winning the top two spots, which proved to be the final event and clinch a tie with the Hoosiers. Sophomore Teyonna Simpson (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS) won the event (39-3 3/4), and junior Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS) was the runner-up in the event.
Perhaps the strongest event for the Maize and Blue on the day was the 600-meter run, as the Wolverines claimed the top four spots. Senior Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) finished first (1:33.62), with senior Adrienne Hunter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), senior Tamika Craig (Inkster, Mich./Dearborn Robichaud HS) and junior Shalina Rankin (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln HS) coming in second, third and fourth, respectively.
In the mile, redshirt freshman Jane Martineau (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant HS) had a personal best in the event and won by almost a minute and a half (5:01.51). Michigan also finished 1-2 in the 800-meter run, with sophomore Rachel Sturtz (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse HS) coming in in front of junior Ursula Taylor (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) in a time of 2:13.94. Senior All-American Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) dominated the 3,000, winning by over 13 seconds (10:07.46).
The Wolverines will continue their season next Saturday (Jan. 20), when they host the Red Simmons Invitational at the U-M Track Building, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
