This Week
The No. 14-ranked Michigan women's cross country team will head to the William & Mary Invitational this Saturday (Sept. 23) in Williamsburg, Va. The meet will have a little more competition for the Maize and Blue. Among the teams competing will be a partial squad from No. 5 Georgetown, North Carolina, host school William & Mary, and Penn State. The Wolverines are looking to win their third consecutive invitational meet of the season.
Last Week
Michigan was successful in defending its 1999 title at the Spiked Shoe Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 16) at State College, Pa. The Wolverines finished first out of 25 teams with 52 points.
Senior Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) led the way with her second consecutive individual title (20:52.69), improving on her 12th-place finish at the 1999 Spiked Shoe Invitational. Seniors Katy Radkewich (Hudson, Ohio/Beaumont HS) and Julie Froud (St. Mary's, Ontario/ St. Mary's D.C.V.I.) followed Jazwinski, coming in seventh (21:37.78) and eighth (21:39.72), respectively.
Pulling Away
Similar to her first race of the season, Katie Jazwinski pulled away from the field to win by a margin of 24 seconds with a time of 20:52.69 at the Spiked Shoe Invitational. The previous week, Jazwinski won the Miami Invitational (Sept. 9) by 22 seconds.
Three in a Row
If the Wolverines win the team title this weekend at the William & Mary Invitational (Sept. 23), it will be their third straight title of the season. Last year, Michigan won back-to-back titles at the Michigan State Invitational and Spiked Shoe Invitational. The last time Michigan won three straight was 1998, when they won five consecutive team titles to start the season.
Katie Jazwinski also looks to win her third straight individual title this weekend. The last Wolverine to accomplish that feat was All-American Katie McGregor (1995-98), who won five consecutive individual titles during the 1998 season.
Moving On Up
The Wolverines moved up two spots to 14th in the latest Finish Lynx NCAA Division I poll (Sept. 18). There are three Big Ten teams represented this week, with Wisconsin the No. 2 team and Minnesota ranked 13th in the nation.
