Wright Drops First-Round Match in NCAA Singles Meet

ATHENS, Ga. -- University of Michigan senior men's tennis player Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) dropped a straight-set decision to Duke's Ramsey Smith in the first round of the 2000 NCAA Singles Championship today (Wednesday, May 24) at the University of Georgia. Wright, listed No. 45 in the current Intercollegiate Tennis Association national singles rankings, fell 6-3, 6-1 to No. 34 Smith at Henry Feild Stadium.
The Wolverines' No. 1 singles player, Wright finished the season with a 24-13 singles record, and is tied for seventh place on the school's career list for singles wins (88-53). He finished the year with a 12-8 dual match record at the top singles spot and finished the year with a 16-7 record against regional opponents. Wright is a three-time All-Big Ten Conference selection, two-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree and was selected GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV second-team earlier this week.
Wright was the first U-M player selected for the 64-player NCAA event since Peter Pusztai in 1996.
