Wolverines Suffer 4-0 Loss to TCU at NCAA Regional

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team had its season come to an end this Mother's Day (Sunday, May 14), losing a 4-0 match to Texas Christian in second-round action at the 2000 NCAA Championships held at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus.

Texas Christian gained the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, while the No. 3 match was suspended after the Horned Frogs claimed the team point. TCU's No. 55-ranked doubles team of Scott Eddins and Jimmy Haney held on to defeat senior Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) and sophomore Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS), winning by a 9-8 score and 7-4 in the tie-break at No. 1. Esteban Carril and Trace Fielding earned an 8-2 victory against senior co-captain John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and freshman Zach Held (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) at No. 2.

The Horned Frogs clinched advancement to the round of 16 in the 2000 NCAA Championship with singles wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6. Petr Koula posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Held at No. 6, and Antonio Gordon claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win against sophomore Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) at No. 4 to gain the first two singles victories for TCU. The Horned Frogs' No. 8-ranked Carril earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 45-ranked Wright at No. 1 to collect the deciding win.

The Wolverines complete the season with a 16-7 overall record and listed No. 22 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national team rankings.

Wright continues his career with a spot in the 64-player NCAA Singles Championship on May 24-28 at the University of Georgia.
