U-M Dominates Iowa in First Outdoor Home Match

Michigan gained the doubles team point behind strong performances from its No. 2 and No. 3 tandems, as well as an 8-6 victory from senior Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) and Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) at the No. 1 spot. Senior co-captain John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and freshman Zach Held (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) posted an 8-3 victory at the No. 2 spot against J.R. Chidley and Hunter Skogman. Sophomore Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy HS) followed with an 8-3 victory against Pete Rose and Eric Kuzlowski at No. 3.
In singles, the Wolverines received straight-set wins from Long, Beam, McCain and senior Ron Nano (Great Neck, N.Y./South HS) and a three-set victory from sophomore Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS). Iowa claimed its only team point as No. 29-ranked Tyler Cleveland beat Wright, ranked No. 55, at the top singles spot.
Michigan closes its home schedule and honors its four seniors -- Long, Brad McFarlane (Kingston, Ontario/Bayridge Secondary HS), Nano and Wright -- against Wisconsin tomorrow (Sunday, April 16, 1 p.m.) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
