Michigan Men's Tennis Bounces Wisconsin, 6-1

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Michigan men's tennis team sent its senior class out with a victory in its final regular-season home match, defeating Wisconsin 6-1 on Sunday afternoon (April 16) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (12-5, 4-4 Big Ten) rebounded after losing the doubles point to sweep all six singles matches to claim the victory.

Wisconsin (8-10, 3-5 Big Ten) gained the doubles team point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Michigan kept the Badgers from a doubles sweep as senior co-captain John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and freshman Zach Held (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) defeated Justin Baker and Scott Rutherford by an 8-1 score at No. 2. Wisconsin received an 8-2 win from Jason Gonzaga and Danny Westerman at No. 3. David Chang and Adam Schumacher clinched the doubles team point with a 9-8 victory over U-M senior Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) and sophomore Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School). Chang and Schumacher won the tie-break 7-1 over Wright and McCain for the victory.

In singles action, Michigan swept all six matches to cap a 3-0 week and even its Big Ten Conference record. Wright, Long, sophomore Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and McCain claimed straight-set wins at No. 1 through No. 4, respectively, and Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) and Held posted three-set victories at the final two singles spots.

Sunday's win over the Badgers marked the final regular-season home match for Michigan seniors Long, Wright, Brad McFarlane (Kingston, Ontario/Bayridge Secondary HS) and Ron Nano (Great Neck, N.Y./South HS).

Michigan closes out the regular season at Ohio State (Saturday, April 22, 1 p.m.) and Penn State (Sunday, April 23, noon) next weekend.
