WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Perfect 3-for-3 games at the plate by a senior and a freshman gave No. 13-ranked Michigan softball team two wins at the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday (March 25). Senior Pam Kosanke (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central HS) led the Wolverines (20-6) to a five-inning, 14-0 run-rule win over Toledo in the opener while freshman Melinda Moulden (LaCrescenta, Calif./Crescenta Valley HS) powered U-M to a 5-1 win over No. 22 Notre Dame in the second game.
Michigan scored six runs on four Toledo errors in the first inning to start the day, then added three runs in the second and five in the third. Kosanke, who drilled a triple among her three hits against Toledo, collected a pair of RBI, including the 100th of her Michigan career. She got offensive assistance from Chrissy Garza (Southgate, Mich./Anderson HS), Kelsey Kollen (Cerritos, Calif./Santa Ana Mater Dei HS) and Karmen Lappo (Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon HS), who each recorded two hits, helping the Wolverines to 15 hits.
While the U-M offense put on a hitting clinic, pitcher Jamie Gillies (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) held the Rockets to five hits and a walk, improving to 5-1 for the season.
Moulden broke open a close game against the Irish with a three-run home run to key a four-run fifth inning for the Wolverines. After an RBI single by Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) sent Garza home for a 2-0 Michigan lead, Moulden's career-first home run to left field scored Stefanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem HS) and pinch runner Kim Bugel (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest HS) to complete the inning. Moulden just missed hitting for the cycle, collecting an RBI single and a double in addition to her home run.
Marie Barda (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South HS) struck out two en route to posting her seventh win in 10 decisions (7-3) and her fourth victory in five games against Top 25 opponents.
Michigan finishes tournament play Sunday (March 26) with games against Bradley (9 a.m.) and Kent (11 a.m.).
