WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Two wins in Sunday's (March 26) Boilermaker Invitational not only pushed No. 13-ranked University of Michigan softball to a 22-6 season record, but also moved 16th-year head coach Carol Hutchins to the top of the all-time Wolverine coaching victory list with 638. Hutchins passed Ray Fisher who compiled 637 wins over his head coaching career with the Michigan baseball program (1921-58).
The Wolverines captured their fourth Boilermaker Invitational championship in four tries with a 6-3 win over Bradley and a five-inning 20-1 win vs. Kent. The two victories also extended their season win streak to 12 games.
Michigan played catch-up in both games, giving up single runs to both Bradley and Kent in the first inning. After spotting 1-0 leads, the Wolverine offense came alive behind the bat of Stefanie Volpe (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth-Salem HS). The sophomore's three-run double keyed a five-run sixth inning against Bradley, while her career-first grand slam home run gave U-M a 6-1 lead after two innings in the Kent game.
Pam Kosanke (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central HS) and Melissa Taylor (Petersburg, Mich./Summerfield HS) each totaled five hits for the day. Freshman Lisa Mack (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) made her first career start, responding with a 3-for-4, two-RBI game against Kent. Michigan scattered 30 hits over the two Sunday games, including 20 vs. Kent. Just six of the 30 hits were for extra bases.
Freshman pitcher Marissa Young (Santa Ana, Calif./Mater Dei HS) collected six strikeouts in an eight-hit performance vs. Bradley to improve to 7-1. Kate Eiland (Fresno, Calif./Clovis West HS) and Jamie Gillies (Saugus, Calif./Saugus HS) worked the Kent game, with Gillies posting the win (6-1).

The 20 runs scored against Kent rank fourth in runs scored and largest margin of victory in Michigan softball history. The record for both runs and margin of victory is 25, set in a five-inning, 25-0 win vs. Morehead State in the 1996 season.
The grand slam home run by Stefanie Volpe is the third Michigan grand slam of the season. The other two were hit by freshman Marissa Young. . . . Shortstop Rebecca Tune (Aloha, Ore./Jesuit HS) missed the first game and start of her career when an injury suffered against Bradley sidelined her for the Kent game. . . . Michigan goes to 7-1 all-time vs. Bradley and 4-0 against Kent.
