Shakespeare, Crisman Lead U-M Past Northwestern

Michigan was led by a pair of All-Americans -- senior Shannon Shakespeare (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Kelvin SS) and junior Jennifer Crisman (Hudsonville, Mich./Jenison HS) -- who paced the team with two first-place finishes apiece. Shakespeare was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke with an impressive 1:01.77, which is an NCAA automatic qualifying mark. She also led the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA consideration time of 50.22. Crisman turned in a first-place performance in the 100-yard backstroke with an NCAA consideration time of 56.06, while also taking the 50-yard freestyle at 23.65.
The Wolverines swept the diving competitions, as Big Ten Diver of the Week Amanda Crews (Champaign, Ill./Central HS) took the three-meter diving and senior Hanna Shin (Inverness, Ill./Fremd HS) placed first in the one-meter competition. Shin's 255.82 score in the one-meter dive is an NCAA zone diving qualifying mark. Crews turned in a score of 261.53 on the three-meter board.
Three other Wolverines turned in first-place performances, as junior Melissa Sugar (Newburgh, Ind./Evansville Day School), sophomore and Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Lindsay Carlberg (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS), and freshman Julie Kern (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) each had victories in individual competition. Sugar finished the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.94, Carlberg led the 200-yard backstroke in an NCAA consideration time of 1:59.97, and Kern finished the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:05.48.
U-M's next meet is tomorrow (Saturday, Jan. 29) at 23rd-ranked Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. The meet begins at 6 p.m. in the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
