Wolverines Fall to Irish Despite Shakespeare's Efforts

The Fighting Irish jumped ahead at the beginning, winning three of the first four events to pull away and take the commanding lead. The Wolverines managed just five first-place finishes for the meet. Michigan falls to 8-4 overall, while Notre Dame keeps its perfect record intact at 10-0 on the season.
Senior All-American Shannon Shakespeare (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Kelvin SS) turned in a team-high three individual first-place finishes plus was part of a first-place relay team. She placed first with NCAA consideration times in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.77) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.59). She also finished with the victory in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.12).
Michigan's lone first-place performance in relay competition -- featuring a squad of Shakespeare, freshman Laura Kaznecki (Wolverine Lake, Mich./Western HS) and junior All-Americans Jennifer Crisman (Hudsonville, Mich./Jenison HS) and Melissa Sugar (Newburgh, Ind./Evansville Day School) -- finished in a time of 1:36.00 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
U-M's other individual first-place performance was turned in by Sugar, who swam the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.46.
The Wolverines will have three weeks off until the Big Ten Championships, which are slated for Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 17-19, in Indianapolis, Ind.
