Crisman, Carlberg Lead Wolverines Past Rice

Junior All-American Jennifer Crisman (Hudsonville, Mich./Jenison HS) and sophomore Lindsay Carlberg (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) each turned in two first-place performances to lead the Wolverines. Crisman was first in the 50-meter freestyle at 26.19, while finishing the 200-meter freestyle in 2:05.18. Carlberg won the 200-meter backstroke in an NCAA consideration time of 2:14.97, while also taking the 100-meter backstroke at 1:04.02.
Five other Wolverines turned in first-place finishes in individual competition. Senior All-American Shannon Shakespeare (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Kelvin SS) placed first in the 100-meter breaststroke, finishing in 1:11.20. Junior All-American Melissa Sugar (Newburgh, Ind./Evansville Day School) was first in the 100-meter freestyle, clocking in at 58.80 seconds, while sophomore Andrea Kurrle (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro HS) placed first in the 200-meter butterfly (2:19.98).
In diving competition, Michigan swept both events, as junior Amanda Crews (Champaign, Ill./Central HS) was first in the one-meter diving (275.63) and senior Hanna Shin (Inverness, Ill./Fremd HS), last week's Big Ten Conference Diver of the Week, came away with the victory on the three-meter board (280.05). The two Wolverines turned in NCAA zone diving qualifying marks in both the one- and three-meter competitions.
The Michigan relay team of Crisman, Carlberg, Shakespeare and senior Emily Cocks (Albion, Mich./Albion HS) finished first in the 200-meter medley relay at 1:58.39.
The next meet for the Wolverines is at home against Northwestern on Friday, Jan. 28. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. at Canham Natatorium.
