Michigan Soccer Shuts Out Hawkeyes, 2-0
9/26/1999 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
The Wolverines got on the board early as Mari Hoff (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) netted the game's first goal at 5:18. From 30 yards out, Hoff curved a shot from the right wing over the Iowa goalie and into the far corner for her second goal of the season.
Michigan applied steady pressure for the next 25 minutes, holding the Hawkeyes without a shot until the 30th minute and without a shot on goal until the 40th minute. Still, the Wolverines were unable to put the game away until late in the second half when Kacy Beitel made the score 2-0. At 86:21, Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS), running the right sideline, sent a crossing pass from the wing to the top of the box. Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) one-timed a pass to Beitel, whose 18-yard blast deflected off a Hawkeye defender and changed direction to find the near corner. The goal was Beitel's fourth of the season and second of the weekend.
Iowa had two good scoring opportunities, both in the second half with the score still 1-0. The Hawkeyes drew three consecutive corner kicks in the first 3:00 of the second stanza but were unable to find the net. Then, with 30:30 left in the game, Stewart left her line, skied in the air and, out of a crowd of Hawkeyes, grabbed a dangerous cross to the middle of the box.
The Wolverines return to action next weekend with a pair of Big Ten home games. On Friday (Oct. 1) Michigan hosts Indiana at 4 p.m., and on Sunday (Oct. 3), the Wolverines battle the Purdue Boilermakers at 1 p.m.
