Stewart Shutout Leads Michigan Over Indiana 3-0
10/1/1999 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Stewart, who has not allowed a goal in the last 237:37, recorded her fourth shutout of the season and the 15th of her career, lowering her goals-against average to a miserly 0.37 in Big Ten Conference action.
The Michigan defense held Indiana (2-5-3, 1-2-2 Big Ten) at bay much of the afternoon, keeping the Hoosiers without a shot attempt until almost 27 minutes had passed and without a shot on goal until 10:20 remained in the first half. Offensively the Wolverines (7-2-1, 4-0-1 Big Ten) used a balanced attack to pound out 24 shots and three goals, while six different Michigan players registered a point.
For the second consecutive game Mari Hoff (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) opened the scoring for the Wolverines, depositing a header off a corner kick into the lower left-hand corner. Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) started the play at 26:19 by sending the corner attempt to the far post, where Hoff buried the chance for her third goal of the season. The assist was Schmitt's team-leading sixth of the season, moving her into a tie with Iowa's Julie Atkocaitis for the Big Ten lead.
Amber Berendowsky (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead with 8:18 left in the first half. Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) fed Berendowsky a pretty touch pass to send the senior striker one-on-one with an Indiana defender at the right corner of the box. Berendowsky juked right and pulled the ball back to her left before ripping a left-footed, 18-yard shot inside the far post for her first goal of the season. It was Berendowsky's 37th career score, leaving her one shy of breaking into the Big Ten's all-time top five.
Laurie Peterson (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) closed the game's scoring with her second goal of the season. The tally, which came with 49 seconds remaining in the game, was set up by freshman defender Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) for her first career point. Sullivant stole the ball at midfield, carried the play down the right sideline and sent a crossing feed into Peterson, who was set up within 10 feet of the net. Peterson volleyed the ball into the empty net for the 3-0 Michigan final.
The Wolverines return to action on Sunday (Oct. 3) at 1 p.m. when they battle the Purdue Boilermakers at the Michigan Soccer Field.

NOTES
-- The Wolverines, 7-0-1 in their last eight Big Ten conference games (4-0-1 in 1999, 3-0-0 to finish 1998) set a new program record eight-game unbeaten streak in Big Ten games. Michigan previously went 6-0-1 in conference games to end 1996 and open 1997.
-- The 4-0-1 start to the Big Ten season is the best in program history. The Wolverines opened the 1997 season 4-0-0 but dropped the fifth game 4-3 at Minnesota.
-- Michigan's six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) is the longest since it put together a pair of seven-game unbeaten streaks in 1997. The Wolverines had another seven-game unbeaten string during the 1996 campaign.
-- Michigan is 6-0-0 this season when Emily Schmitt records a point.
