Beitel Leads Michigan Soccer Team Over Purdue
10/3/1999 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Michigan opened the scoring at 10:09, with Beitel extending her scoring streak to a career-long four games. Freshman defender Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) created the play with a crossing pass from the right wing to the five-yard mark inside the box. Beitel, playing the ball off a bounce, headed the pass over the Boiler goalie for her fifth score of the season.
The teams exchanged goals in the final 30 seconds of the first half. Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS), sprung on a breakaway by Michele Pesiri (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead at 44:30. The goal was Spaccarotella's third of the season, while the assist marked Pesiri's first collegiate point.
Purdue countered immediately as Sara Field won a ball deep in the Michigan zone, dribbled in and fired a shot inside the lower left corner to break Michigan goalie Carissa Stewart's (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) shutout string of 382:32 minutes.
The Wolverines came out strong in the second half, netting a pair of goals to close the scoring. Freshman Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season when Beitel's through ball sprung her on a breakaway in the 58th minute. Emily Schmitt's (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) long pass in the 71st minute led to Amber Berendowsky's (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) second goal of the season. Schmitt's pass was run down by Crumpton on the left wing near the goal line. Crumpton cut into the box, drawing the attention of the Purdue goalie, before dropping a pass back to Berendowsky all alone in front of the net.
The Wolverines have a short layoff as they travel to No. 6 Notre Dame for a 4 p.m. CDT midweek game on Tuesday (Oct. 5). Michigan then returns home to face in-state rival Michigan State at 4 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 8). Following the MSU contest, the team will host a soccer clinic for girls age 9 and up.
