U-M Doubles Team Advances at National Clay Courts

McCain and Wright, the Wolverines' No. 1 doubles team for the majority of the 1998-99 season, opened with a first-round bye. The pair reached the main draw with an 8-5 victory over Duke's Marco Cerenko and Ted Rueger on Tuesday (Sept. 21). McCain and Wright were one of eight doubles teams from the qualifying portion of the draw to advance to the 32-team main draw slated to begin Thursday (Sept. 23).
On Wednesday (Sept. 22), senior John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) lost in the first round of singles at the National Clay Court Championships, keeping him from reaching his 60th career singles victory (59-26 record). Long lost to No. 1 seed Alex Fiedler of Pacific, ranked 70th in the country, by an 8-4 score.
Wright, ranked 71st nationally in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, will begin competition in the 64-player singles main draw Thursday (Sept. 23). He faces Auburn's Tiago Ruffoni in first-round action. Wright and McCain team to play No. 1 seeds Dumitru Caradima and Shuon Madden of Texas A&M, listed No. 1 in the country by the ITA.
