STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan baseball team split a Big Ten Conference doubleheader at Penn State on Saturday, May 15, with the Wolverines taking game one 6-1 and the Nittany Lions scoring a 13-3 victory in the nightcap. The Michigan win in the opener, coupled with two Indiana losses at Ohio State on Saturday, assured the Wolverines of a spot in next week's (May 20-23) four-team Big Ten Tournament at Ohio State.
Bryce Ralston (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis HS) and Bobby Korecky (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) allowed no earned runs while combining on a five-hitter in the opener. Ralston improved to 8-1 on the season and 6-0 in Big Ten play, going the first five innings before yielding to Korecky, who fanned three in his two innings.
Jay Dines (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) doubled to open the third inning and came around to score U-M's first run on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Scales (Roswell, Ga./Milton HS). Dines also was in the middle of Michigan's three-run fourth inning, contributing an RBI single.
Dines, Brian Bush (Warren, Ohio/Howland HS) and David Parrish (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) each collected two hits in the opener, and Bush added a pair of stolen bases.
In the nightcap, the Nittany Lions jumped on Wolverine starter Vince Pistilli (Highland, Ind./Highland HS) in the first inning, scoring four runs on three hits, two walks and two wild pitches in his only inning of work. Penn State had two other big innings, getting three runs in the fourth and five in the sixth.
Scott Tousa (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands HS) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Mike Seestedt (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart HS) scored two of the Wolverines' three runs.
The two teams will close out their four-game series as well as their regular-season schedules with a 1 p.m. single game Sunday (May 16). Luke Bonner (Taylor, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child HS) is the probable starter for Michigan.
