ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior co-captain Mike Cervenak's (New Boston, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child HS) three-run double capped a six-run third inning rally to spark the University of Michigan's 12-3 win over intra-county rival Eastern Michigan in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon (April 7).
Cervenak's double, the 51st of his career, pushed Michigan's lead to 8-0, and the Wolverines (17-13) led 12-0 after seven innings before EMU (8-13) scored three runs in the last two inning for the final margin.
Senior RHP Ryan Kelley (Northville, Mich./Dearborn Divine Child HS) blanked the Eagles on two hits for the first five innings to record his second win of the season (2-0). Kelley is second on the team in appearances (10) and has gone five innings in each of his two starts.
Freshman LHP Kirk Taylor (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) worked three innings and senior LHP Robbie Reid (Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork HS) worked the ninth after starting the game in left field.
Senior second baseman Bobby Scales (Roswell, Ga./Milton HS) used a second-inning single to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Scales had hits in the first 12 games of the season and has hit safely in 27 of the 30 games played by the Wolverines.
The Wolverines were able to get 19 players in the game, including freshman Nate Wright (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew HS), who made his Wolverine debut as a defensive replacement at first base in the ninth inning. Wright also notched his first stat, a putout.
For the second straight week, Michigan hosts an undefeated first-place team in Big Ten Conference action as the 4-0 Ohio State Buckeyes play four games in Fisher Stadium (April 9-11).
