2/20/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Michigan (17-9-6, 14-7-5 CCHA) fell behind early when Joe Goodenow fired a shot which hit U-M netminder Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) and then slide under his pads for Michigan State's Rustyn Dolyny to tap in at the 9:34 mark of the first period.
The score remained 1-0 after the second period despite several scoring chances by the Wolverines, including two shots off of the goal posts.
The Spartans (24-3-6, 18-2-6 CCHA) added a second goal when Adam Hall fired the puck over Blackburn's shoulder on a 2-on-1 breakaway. Michigan was able to cut the lead in half when Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) tipped in a shot from Jeff Jillson (North Smithfield, R.I.) at the 17:04 mark of the final period. However, Michigan State regained a two-goal lead on an empty-net goal by Adam Hall with 44 seconds remaining in the game to close the game at 3-1.
Michigan's Blackburn made 22 saves in the loss, while Michigan State's Joe Blackburn stopped 26 shots for the win.
Michigan looks to end the winless streak when Miami (Ohio) visits Yost Ice Arena next Friday (Feb. 26) and Saturday (Feb. 27). Both games start at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling the Michigan Ticket Office at 734-764-0247.

QUOTES
HEAD COACH RED BERENSON
"Ironically, I think this is the best-played game for us in the past month. A couple of bounces and it is a different game."
"We had chances to score. We have to just keep working, stick together, and stay positive."
"We are not satisfied with being a middle-of-the-pack team. There is too much pride to give up. We have to get ready for the playoffs."
SENIOR CAPTAIN BUBBA BERENZWEIG
"I thought the team played well tonight. I am happy with the team. We worked hard, and it was a different effort than before. We were reading each other, working smart and supporting each other. It was just a better effort."
