Seniors Key Wolverines to 6-1 Win Over RedHawks
2/26/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Playing in his first game of the season and sixth of his career, Daddario finished the game for Michigan and stopped both shots he faced. He joined Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.), no saves, and Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.), 19 saves and one goal allowed, in net for the Wolverines' first win in the last nine games.
Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) opened the scoring for Michigan (18-9-6, 15-7-5 CCHA) with a wrap-around goal 3:34 into the game. Exactly three minutes later, Rominski netted his 12th goal of the season after captain Berenzweig kept the puck in the offensive zone and advanced the puck to Rominski. The Wolverines scored their third goal of the period at the 10:11 mark when Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) deflected a Jeff Jillson (North Smithfield, R.I.) shot from the high slot.
Following a goaltender change of Ian Olsen for starter Andy Marsh for Miami, the RedHawks scored their only goal of the game with 2:02 left in the first period after a flury in front of the net.
Miami (10-18-5, 8-15-4 CCHA) and the Wolverines went scoreless for the second period, but Ritchlin netted his ninth goal of the season 3:41 into the final period for Michigan's fourth score of the night. Fellow senior Crozier added another goal at the 5:15 mark after he slammed the puck past Miami's goaltender in front of the net. The Wolverines closed out the scoring when Rominski chipped the puck to Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) and he took it on a breakaway and beat Olsen with his shot just 45 seconds after Crozier's goal.
Michigan plays its final regular-season home game tomorrow (Feb. 27) with another match against the RedHawks. Game time is 7 p.m., with the recognition of the seniors following the game.

QUOTES
HEAD COACH RED BERENSON
"We have to be a better team than we were in the second period. We gave them too much. We gave them pretty good chances. We turned the puck over. I thought Blackburn was a big factor in the outcome of the second period. They didn't score a goal, but they outshot us and outplayed us. We had a mediocre second period because of things we did with the puck and some things without the puck."
"Miami is a great transition team. When the puck turns over, they are gone. The had us outnumbered more than a few times tonight, but it didn't cost us."
"We had some good shots from defense, and more forwards took shots and made plays. We are a team that has to play in the other team's zone. I thought we played more in their zone the two good periods (first and third)."
"(Playing seldom-used senior goaltender Greg Daddario) was obviously a sentimental thing. Daddario is just a great, great kid and never had the chance to start a game here. You could see from the reaction of the fans and the players that they all appreciate what he has done for this program. I am really glad we had a chance to put him in, and he is not a bad goalie. On the other hand, he has been a great goalie coach for these younger goalies, and it was fitting he got a chance (to play)."
SENIOR WINGER SEAN RITCHLIN
"The win gave us confidence, which I think is an important thing. Coach keeps us down on a nice, even level so we don't get too down when we lose or too hot when we win. We still have a lot to prove to this league and to ourselves, so I don't think we are going to get too up from beating anyone."
SENIOR WINGER GREG CROZIER
"I think our intensity (was the difference from the last eight games). Those first three goals and the third period were flashes of the Michigan team we should be. Those are flashes of teams all three of us (Ritchlin, Crozier and Daddario) have been on for the last three-plus years. If we play this way, I don't think we should lose to anybody. It is just a matter of putting all the pieces together like we did tonight."
SENIOR GOALTENDER GREG DADDARIO
"It was just the greatest thrill for me to get in there, especially this weekend. It just means so much and is so rewarding."
"You always want to make the first save when you get in there, and then you can settle down a bit. It was a good long shot, you always like those to start out with. I was pretty happy about that."
