Wolverines Suffer 4-2 Loss to Lake Superior State

The Lakers opened the scoring in the first period when Jeff Cheeseman capitalized on a delayed penalty. Cheeseman took a pass from Blaine McCauley at center ice, skated around Michigan defenseman Sean Peach (Langley, B.C.) and slid a backhand shot under Scarpace to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
The second period featured a wild stretch which produced four goals in just 1:31. Lake Superior's Mike Vigilante started the scoring spree when his shot from the left point deflected off Jay Vancik's (W. Bloomfield, Mich.) stick and past Scarpace at the 13:29 mark of the second. Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) closed the gap to one with his sixth goal of the season at the 14:23 mark. With the Wolverines on the power play, Jeff Jillson (N. Smithfield, R.I.) skated between the circles and slipped a pass behind Laker defender Jeremy Baschusz to Cammalleri, who beat LSSU goalie Jayme Platt.
The Lakers regained their two-goal advantage 21 seconds later. Bachusz fired a shot from the left point and Scarpace made the first stop, but the rebound trickled to Mike Vigilante, who tapped the puck into the open net. Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) pulled the Wolverines to within one just 16 seconds later after he skated down the right wing and fired a shot just inside the left post, beating Platt. The Lakers added an empty net goal late in the third period to cap the scoring at 4-2.
Lake Superior State was the last team to sweep the Wolverines at Yost, with 3-2 and 7-1 wins on Jan. 6-7, 1989, respectively. With two wins against U-M last season, the Lakers have now won the last four meetings between the two teams.
Next weekend the Wolverines take part in the College Hockey Showcase at Yost Ice Arena. Michigan hosts Minnesota Friday (Nov. 26) night, followed by a Saturday (Nov. 27) contest against Wisconsin.
