Gophers Down U-M 6-1 in College Hockey Showcase
11/26/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Minnesota (5-7-1), struck early in first period at the 5:20 mark when Nate Miller beat Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) from between the circles to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, Westrum scored his first goal of the night, on a Minnesota power play. Then 25 seconds later, Stuart Senden stole the puck from defenseman Sean Peach (Langley, B.C.) along the right boards and slid it under O'Malley to give the Gophers a 3-0 lead. After surrendering three goals in just over eight minutes of play, O'Malley was replaced by L.J. Scarpace (Dearborn, Mich.) in goal.
Late in the second period, with the Wolverines gaining momentum, the Gophers scored two goals in under 30 seconds to push their lead to 5-0. The Gophers' fourth goal came from Westrum, his second power-play goal of the night, when he skated around defenseman Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) and lifted the puck over Scarpace. Minnesota's fifth goal came on a two-on-one break when Aaron Miskovich fed a pass around a sliding Jeff Jillson (North Smithfield, R.I.) to Nick Anthony, who beat Scarpace.
In the third period, the Gophers extended their lead to 6-0 when Pat O'Leary scored off a pass from Dan Welch on a two-on-one break. Michigan's Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) prevented the shutout when Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) skated around a Gopher defenseman and found Hilbert on the right of the goal. Hilbert beat Gopher goaltender Adam Hauser for a four-on-three power-play goal.
Hauser earned the win to improve his record to 5-6-1, while O'Malley suffered the loss to fall to 8-3-0 this season.
The loss ends Michigan's six-game winning streak over the Gophers. The loss, coupled with last weekend's series sweep at the hands of Lake Superior State, marks the fist time since 1988 that the Wolverines have lost three consecutive games at Yost Ice Arena.
The Wolverines (10-4-1) return to the ice to host the third-ranked Wisconsin Badgers in game two of the 1999 College Hockey Showcase presented by Ameritech starting at 7:05 p.m.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On getting behind early ... "I think that was the worst part, getting down early and the penalties. Obviously penalties definitely hurt us. When you're coming from behind, it's tough because every goal creates a higher mountain to climb. The pucks aren't going in for us, whether it's the bounces or the finish or the other team's goalie, but we've been through that before. We just have to start better, there's no question. The last four games we've been coming from behind. It's cost us big. It's important that we get off to a better start."
On the team effort ... "I think the effort is right there. We're not far off the mark. As far as the results and the execution, we're still stressing playing better defense. I can't say I'm happy with the result, but when you look at the game and how it went with the momentum, the first period was huge. We just have to have a better first period. That was our strength in the first month."
On the goaltending change in the first period ... "It was a pretty easy decision. They scored three goals in four shots. Whether we need to turn around as a team or in goal. Sometimes it's not fair to a goalie, but it's not acceptable giving up those kind of goals on those kinds of shots. We needed a change, but we didn't give our goalies any goals."
On goalie Kevin O'Malley struggling ... "This is adversity for the whole team, not just one player. He knows he has a role and a job to do, and he knows he can play this game much better. That's the one thing the goalie has to look at, 'Are these shots that I should have been able to save.' If they are, then that's the thing you kick yourself about. It's a game of mistakes. We all make them, but when a goalie makes them, it shows up on the scoreboard."
Sophomore Center Mike Comrie
On the slow start ... "It's tough when you fall behind, but we put ourselves in that position by taking some penalties. We've done that the last few games, and I think it has hurt us. It's mentally tough to sit on the bench and get a penalty early on. I think we have to rebound if that happens and focus on the next part of the game."
Senior Defenseman Sean Peach
On the goaltending ... "Kevin (O'Malley) has played hockey for a while, so I'm sure this isn't the first time it's happened to him. He had a tough night, and we need him tomorrow night. He's a very good goalie. We have confidence in him. He's done it before for us. He's been there when we've won. He knows how to win, so we just have to regroup and be there for him. It's not his fault at all. It's the team's fault."
On the young players ... "Some of the freshman haven't been there before. We experienced this last year, but they're doing fine. We just have to keep talking to them. They're very good freshmen, and I'm sure they'll work their way out of this. The whole team will. We have to forget about tonight and focus on tomorrow. We can still have a good weekend if we win tomorrow."
