Freshmen Lead Wolverines Over Miami at Firstar Center
11/12/1999 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) opened Michigan's scoring with a goal at the 13:15 mark of the first period. He scored his second goal of the year after defenseman Dave Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) hit him on the left side of the crease with a pass from the right point. Ironically, Ortmeyer's brother, Jake, a defenseman for Miami, was on the ice when his younger brother scored the goal for the Wolverines.
Michigan (9-1-0, 6-1-0 CCHA) just missed a chance to take a two-goal lead into the first intermission when Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.) had a goal disallowed with just over a minute left in the period because a teammate was in the crease.
Miami (5-3-2, 2-2-2 CCHA) tied the game just 19 seconds into the second period with a goal by Dustin Whitecotton, but the Wolverines countered when Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) scored an unassisted goal at the 1:14 mark. On the goal, Hilbert found himself behind the net with the puck and no one to pass to, so he brought it out to the slot and fired a shot past Andy Marsh's glove.
Shouneyia netted the game-winner midway through the second period after taking a nice pass from Jeff Jillson (N. Smithfield, R.I.) on a breakaway. The goal came just after Michigan killed a 5-on-3 Miami power play.
Miami closed to within one at the start of the third period, but once again, Michigan countered when Hilbert netted his second goal of the night five minutes into the third period.
Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) earned his seventh win of the season after stopping 22 shots. Miami's Marsh stopped 17 shots in 59 minutes of action.
In tonight's win, Mike Comrie (Edmonton, Alberta) was held scoreless for the first time this season, ending a streak of nine consecutive games dating back to the season opener Oct. 7 at Notre Dame.
The Wolverines and the RedHawks meet again tomorrow night in Oxford, Ohio, at the Goggin Ice Arena on Miami's campus at 7:05 p.m.
