Wolverines Finish 19th at Competitive Nelson Invite

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- In its biggest test of the young season, the University of Michigan men's golf team traveled west to participate against nine of the top 25 rated men's golf teams in the country at the Nelson Invitational, hosted by Stanford University Friday through Sunday (Oct. 29-31). The Wolverines finished with rounds of 304-292-287 for a tournament total of 883 at the Stanford University Golf Course.
The Michigan duo of senior Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) paced the way for the Wolverines. Harris had the top Wolverine finish as he tied for 30th after rounds of 76-71-70 for a 217 tournament total. Matthews tied for 39th after consistent rounds of 73-72-73 for a 218 total.
Junior Scott Hayes (Rochester, Mich./Rochester HS) finished tied for 67th after rounds of 80-73-70 for a tournament total of 223. Sophomore Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) tied for 83rd after firing rounds of 77-76-74 for a 227 total, and senior Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) finished 100th after rounds of 78-77-80 for a 235 total.
Host Stanford came back to win the Nelson team title as the Cardinal beat Fresno State by one stroke. Stanford finished with round scores of 287-278-281 for an 847 total. Fresno State finished with round scores of 289-274-285 for an 848. Northwestern rounded out the top three with a 853 team total after rounds of 285-279-290. Tulsa's Martin Maritz won the individual title with a 10-under-par total of 203 (67-68-68). Northwestern's Jess Daley was the runner-up with a 9-under 204 after rounds of 68-70-66.
The Wolverines will head to Hawaii for their next two tournament stops as they will compete in the Hawaii Invitational Nov. 22-23 in Honolulu (Lo'olau Golf Club), followed by the Mauna Kea Collegiate Invitational Nov. 25-26 in Hilo (Hapuna Golf Club).
