Wisconsin Spoils Michigan's Title Bid with Upset Win
10/17/1999 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Wisconsin carried a 1-0 lead into halftime after Jaime Barbian took advantage of a short clearing attempt by the Wolverines to score in the eighth minute of play. The Badgers extended the lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute when Winter Pero beat Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) to the far post.
Michigan battled back and cut the deficit to 2-1 on Mari Hoff's (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) goal in the 79th minute. Hoff took a feed from Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) and blasted a shot from the top of the box for her fourth goal of the season.
The Badgers regained control of the game 2:09 later when Heidi Wegleitner hooked a ball into the goal from the end line.
The Wolverines, assured of no worse than a second-place finish in the conference, await the result of next Friday's (Oct. 22) match between Penn State and Ohio State to determine the Big Ten champion and top seed for the Big Ten Tournament. Penn State, 8-0-1 in the conference, needs only to win or tie the match for the title, but if Ohio State wins, Michigan and Penn State share top billing in the conference.
The Wolverines closes their home slate at the Michigan Soccer Field with non-conference match against Bulter at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 24).
