Berendowsky Ties Big Ten Mark as U-M Blanks Butler
10/24/1999 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
The star of the day, however, was senior forward Amber Berendowsky (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS). Slowed by an ankle injury most of the season, Berendowsky turned in her finest performance of the season, scoring one goal and assisting on another while leading the team with seven shots, most of which resulted in quality scoring chances. Berendowsky's assist, a helper on Michigan's second goal of the game, was her 31st, tying the Big Ten career mark set by Rachel Hoffman of Penn State (1994-97).
The Wolverines (12-4-1, 8-1-1 Big Ten) opened up a close game with three tallies in a 2:06 span of the second half. Big Ten Freshman of the Year candidate Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) started the barrage at 61:37. Mari Hoff (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) played a long ball to spring Berendowsky on a break. Berendowsky corralled the ball and dribbled into the box before playing a crossing pass to Crumpton, who deposited the ball into the lower far corner for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Hoff made the score 3-0 at 63:08 with a 20-yard blast off a Crumpton pass low and to the Butler goalie's left. It was Hoff's fourth goal of the season and, combined with the assist moments earlier, pushed her career points total to 50, the seventh Wolverine to reach the 50-point plateau.
Freshman Carly Williamson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington HS) added her first collegiate goal 35 seconds later, extending the lead to 4-0. Williamson tracked down a loose ball deep on the right wing and played a centering pass to the two-yard area, where the ball deflected off a Butler defender and caromed into the net.
Shannon Poole (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) opened the scoring with the game's only tally of the first half. The Wolverines earned a corner kick, but Emily Schmitt's (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) send-in was blocked by the Butler keeper back into the corner. Schmitt raced in and resent the cross attempt to Poole at the far post, and Poole headed the ball into the net at 39:45 for her first goal of the season.
Berendowsky and Abby Tompkins (Grosse Pointe, Mich./University Liggett HS), who converted a sliding pass from Jen Stahl (Amston, Conn./Rham HS), closed out the scoring in the 85th and 86th minutes, respectively.
The Wolverines close their regular-season schedule next weekend with a pair of games in Lexington, Ky. Michigan meets Alabama in a 5 p.m. game on Friday (Oct. 29) and No. 13 Kentucky in a 3 p.m. game on Sunday (Oct. 31).
