Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) provided the game-winning tally 5:37 into the second half. Amber Berendowsky (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) created the play, carrying the ball into the offensive zone. At the right corner of the box, Berendowsky tried to send a pass to Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS), but it was deflected by a defender into the middle of the field. Schmitt won the race to the ball and blasted a 20-yard shot into the lower left corner of the net for her fifth tally of the season.
Michigan (13-4-1) created pressure from the opening whistle, firing off five shots in the first 5:00 of the game. In the early moments of the game, Laurie Peterson (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) hit a post from 25 yards out, Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) missed a half-empty net when her header slid just high, and Latonda Eubanks, Alabama's first-half goalie, stretched to her fullest to deflect Michele Pesiri's (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) 15-yard blast.
The Wolverines finally got on the board at 27:30 when Beitel converted her ninth goal of the season. Crumpton created the opportunity by one-touching Schmitt's centering pass into the box. Beitel's five-yard chip was deflected by Alabama's goalie but still carried into the net.
Alabama (6-13) tied the game off a corner kick with 15:30 left in the first half. Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) left her line to grab the play-in but lost the ball in traffic. Martha Mouring popped the loose ball into the vacated net.
Alabama nearly tied the game midway through the second half when Mouring's free kick from 35 yards out hit the crossbar and was cleared by the Michigan defense.
The Wolverines close their regular-season schedule at 3 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 31) when they face No. 14 Kentucky. Michigan then moves to Bloomington, Ind., for the Big Ten Tournament (Nov. 5-7). The Wolverines open the tournament against Michigan State at 3 p.m. next Friday (Nov. 5).
