Michigan Earns First Tournament Win in Three Years at Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's golf team placed four golfers in the top 15 and won its first tournament in nearly three years as the Wolverines walked away with the Xavier Invitational title Oct. 11-12 at the Golf Center at Kings Island Resort.
The Wolverines led from start to finish in the 54-hole tournament as they finished with round scores of 292-281-292 for a three round total of 865 to win by two strokes. The title marks the first tournament the Wolverines have won in 35 tries. The last title came Oct. 5-6, 1996 when Michigan hosted and won the Wolverine Invitational at the U-M golf course.
Marshall finished as the Invitational runner-up with a team finish of 867 after rounds of 289-285-293. Notre Dame rounded out the top three as the Irish finished with 872 after rounds of 295-282-295.
Sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) and senior Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) paced the way for the Wolverines as Matthews finished tied for seventh and Harris finished tied for 10th. Matthews fired a 74 in the first round of the Invitational by fired back with a season best 68 in the second round to climb the leader board. He closed out with a 72 to finish with a team best score of 214. Harris followed suite swinging for a 73 in the first round and coming back with a 69 in the second. He closed out with a 74 to finish with a three round total of 216.
Senior Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester Adams HS (Mich.) and sophomore Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) both finished tied for 13th. Like Matthews and Harris, Affeldt fired a 75 in the open round but came roaring back with a 69 in the second round and closed out with a 74 to finish with a three round total of 218. After using the weekly qualifier to make the trip to Cincinnati, Matthews fired a team best 70 in the opening round and struggled in the second shooting a 76, but rebounded to fire a 72 in the third round to finish with a 218.
Junior Scott Hayes (Rochester, Mich./Rochester HS) finished tied for 70th after rounds of 81, 75 and 75 for a 231 Invite total.
The Wolverines will head west to participate in the Stanford Invitational, Fri.-Sun., Oct. 29-31 in Palo Alto, Calif. at the Stanford University Golf Course.
