Beam and Long Advance in Singles at All-American Championships

Senior John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and sophomore Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) were two of 23 prequalifiers to advance to the qualifying draw of the 1999 All-American Championships (Oct. 12-13). Overall, the Wolverines posted a victory in all seven opening round singles matches and claimed a 16-5 record in singles competition during the prequalifier. Michigan claimed a win in two-of-three doubles matches and finished with a 2-3 mark.
Long made his way to the qualifying portion of the tournament by posting an impressive 4-0 record in the prequalifier. He survived three-set match in the first round against Texas' Michael Domanski (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) then disposed of three consecutive opponents in straight sets - Boise State's Gabe Coren (7-5, 6-1), Ball State's Ryan Baxter (6-1, 6-1) and UC-Irvine's David Matthew (7-5, 6-0) to reach the qualifying singles draw. Long's first-round victory was the 60th singles win of his career (63-27 overall record).
Beam advanced with three wins in the prequalifier. Beam got things underway by beating Miami's Arpad Odry in the first round (6-3, 6-2) and held on for a three-set victory over Denver's Tomasz Wawrzyniak (7-6, 5-7, 6-2) in the second round. He advanced with a third-round win over Texas-Arlington's Per-Nik Karlsson (6-3, 6-4).
Sophomore Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) came within one victory of advancing, losing in the fourth round to Oklahoma State's Chris Bates (7-5, 6-3). Cox posted a 3-1 tournament record and started with impressive victories over Denver's Magnus Ramfelt (6-3, 6-3) and Texas A&M's Keith From (6-3, 7-6). He came back from an opening set loss in the third round to defeat Arizona's Caleb Marquardt (4-6, 6-0, 6-2) before losing to Ramfelt.
Freshman Zachary Held (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) and senior Brad McFarlane (Kingston, Ontario/Bayridge Secondary HS) posted 2-1 records at the All-American Championships. Sophomore Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) and senior Ron Nano (Great Neck, N.Y./South HS) won opening round matches before losing second round contests.
