Wolverines, Badgers Play to Tie in Showcase
11/29/1998 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
In the first period, Michigan (9-2-2, 7-1-1 CCHA) had a power-play goal disallowed after Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) deflected a Dave Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) shot into the net with his stick above the crossbar. It was the second time in three games the Wolverines have had a goal waved off because of a high-stick deflection.
Michigan was able to keep the Badgers (5-6-2, 5-4-1 WCHA) off the scoreboard at the end of the first period with a defensive save by Bubba Berenzweig (Arlington Heights, Ill.) after goalie Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) tried to play the puck but hit it into a sliding Wisconsin player, allowing a trailing Badger to get a shot from about 15 feet away past Blackburn, who had not yet returned to the crease.
Michigan took an early lead just 1:38 into the second period on a goal by Berenzweig from just right of center at the blue line that went high and over the shoulder of Melanson. Kosick and Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) picked up assists on the play after working the puck behind the net before passing it out the Berenzweig at the point.
Wisconsin tied game at 14:20 of the same period after Dave Tanabe scored just over Blackburn's pads on the right side of the net.
The period started to get rough toward the end as 12 minutes worth of roughing penalties were distributed after Dale Rominski (Farmington Hills, Mich.) was run into the boards behind the net and a large scuffle broke out with 4:50 remaining. Then, at the 16:39 minute mark, Bobby Hayes (Westland, Mich.) was assessed a five-minute major for slashing. However, Wisconsin's Alex Brooks picked up a holding penalty after dragging down a Michigan player on a short-handed breakaway.
Blackburn made 21 saves to bring his record to 9-1-2, while Melanson (5-6-2) stopped 30 shots for the Badgers.
Michigan takes to the road again next week for a set of games against Central Collegiate Hockey Association opponents. The Wolverines are at Miami (Ohio) on Friday (Dec. 4) at 7 p.m. in Oxford, Ohio, and at Bowling Green State on Saturday (Dec. 5) at 7 p.m. in Bowling Green, Ohio.
