Halloween Curse Strikes U-M Hockey Again
10/31/1998 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
The Wildcats (7-1-0, 3-1-0 CCHA) scored four goals in the second period, with the last two coming just 64 seconds apart. The last time Michigan allowed four goals in one period was Oct. 20, 1995, in a 7-2 loss to Western Michigan.
Michigan took the lead into the locker room after the first as Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored on the only Wolverine shot of the period. Goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) stopped all four NMU shots in the first period but gave up four goals on six shots in the second period before Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) relieved him at the 12:27 mark. O'Malley stopped 12 of the Wildcats' 14 shots to finish the game.
Northern Michigan's Dan Ragusett (4-0-0) made 13 saves for the win, while Blackburn (5-1-0) suffered the first loss of his Michigan career.
Michigan has next weekend off and returns to action on Friday, Oct. 13, to face the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks at 7 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.

QUOTES
COACH RED BERENSON
On the second period ...
"The second period was our undoing. We gave up some poor goals."
On Northern's play ...
"Northern played well, they played hard. (Northern) played a good defensive game."
On what to learn from this game ...
"We don't know how good we are. We certainly can't live off of last year."
FRESHMAN GOALTENDER KEVIN O'MALLEY
On replacing Blackburn in the second ...
"I was ready when I came in. I thought everything went well except for the bounce (O'Malley left the crease to play the puck behind the goal, but the puck took a bad bounce off of the side boards and redirected into the net), but sometimes things happen. I guess it happened to (former U-M goaltender Marty) Turco also."
MICHIGAN CAPTAIN BUBBA BERENZWEIG
On the second period ...
"They had a lot of good opportunities. We got in one of our funks again in the second period."
On the mood of the team after the first period ...
"I think we got a little too comfortable with that one-goal lead."
